Lindley Catering Wins £8 Million Colchester Community Stadium Catering Contract

LINDLEY CATERING WINS £8 MILLION COLCHESTER COMMUNITY STADIUM CATERING CONTRACT

Lindley Catering has received an end of season boost having been awarded the solus catering contract for both public and executive catering at the new £14 million, 10,000-seated Colchester Community Stadium which is due to open later this summer.

The five year deal worth £8 million means that Lindley - which has provided a public catering service for Colchester United FC for the past seven years - will be transferring with the League 1 football club to the new community stadium which will become the team's home ground when they relocate from their current premises at Layer Road at the start of the 2008/09 football season.

Lindley Catering was selected through a tender process which involved Colchester Borough Council as the stadium will not only be the home ground for Colchester United FC, but has also been designed to embrace a "community" initiative to provide a range of sporting and social facilities to benefit local residents.

This means that in addition to managing all of the catering and bars on the public concourse and in the hospitality areas (including 24 hospitality boxes), Lindley will also be responsible for the catering at a 50 seat coffee shop located in a 200 sq m community area which will be open on busy week days, match days and major events. The Stadium's superb conference facilities will also make it one of the region's premier conference centres providing capacity for 400 people.

There will be 4-5 full-time Lindley Catering staff located at the new stadium and they will be supported by 100-plus casual and part-time staff.

Sue Page, Head of Commercial Operations at Colchester United FC, says: "We have worked with Lindley Catering for the past seven years and have benefited from their experience and expertise in managing our catering requirements at Layer Road.

"The new Community Stadium opens up a whole host of opportunities for us to develop revenue for the Club outside match days and we were keen to retain Lindley's skills to help us in this important area. Colchester Borough Council also wanted to ensure that the local community is being catered for. A coffee shop has been incorporated within the stadium for everyday use and became part of the remit for the catering companies tendering for the business.

"Lindley Catering ticked all of the boxes. They claim to be a national caterer with a local touch and we have found this to be very much the case. Their flexibility and adaptability has made them the perfect partner for this new venture."

Paul Biffen, Lindley Catering's Sales & Marketing Director, says: "Having been designed from scratch as a community stadium, the venue offers enormous potential for use by the local community outside match days.

"The state-of-the art corporate hospitality areas have been built with flexibility in mind so they can be used for theatre style conferences for up to 400 people, with areas which can be used for break out sessions. The stadium itself can also be expanded to seat up to 18,000 if required in the future. We're delighted to be part of this exciting new project and look forward to working with Colchester United and Colchester Borough Council in making the stadium an integral part of the community and a prestigious events venue within the region."

This project involves teaching school children about healthy lifestyles; the importance of linking food and being active through sports. Lindley has developed a cook book for kids that focus on healthy, affordable recipes that taste great. Lindley will demonstrate recipes to the school children when they visit the stadium and they can take away the cook books to continue the cooking experience at home with their families. This type of initiative brings to life what the children have been learning in their healthy eating sessions and will hopefully give them a taste for freshly prepared and healthy food.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club (GCCC):

The school children will visit our kitchens in the stadium and be shown how to prepare great healthy, seasonal meals from their produce. The end of term will finish with a farmers style market with the schools shoeing off their produce and our chefs getting involved in some theatre cooking. Teaching children about fresh produce; what it is, where it comes from, how to grow and cook it are all valuable lessons that will help improve their welfare long term and of course we will have some fun on the way!

Kirklees College provide Lindley employees working at the Stadium the opportunity to study for formal qualifications and also develop apprenticeship schemes.

In early November Lindley held an event in conjunction with Huddersfield Police and Kirklees neighbourhood council. The general manager Anthony Hegney conducted a full stadium tour for Kirklees council residents based on talking about employment in the catering industry and the benefits of healthy eating. Martin the head chef did a short cookery demo in the kitchen he made a very basic pea & mint soup to show people how simple and cost effective it was to feed a family on a budget and they all got the opportunity to watch and taste at the end.
